Picking out the perfect outfits for your equine photo shoot doesn’t have to be that complicated. Yes, there are things you may want to consider, like time of year and what the foliage is like, your horse’s color, the mood you want to capture and the story you want to tell.
To get you started though, here are just a few things I will never tell you to wear…
🌟A matching shirt and saddle pad (just… please, no.)
🌟Something uncomfortable because it looks good
🌟An outfit that doesn’t feel like you
🌟Something you can’t move in
Beyond that, resist the urge to overthink it too much and use these helpful tips and I promise you, it will be great!
Do you have ranch roots or are you more in a flowy dress kind of mood? Figuring out your vibe for this session is key to moving forward and picking out the clothing and accessories you want to wear.
Neutrals photograph beautifully, but consider the time of year. If it’s spring, the lighter neutrals work great against green grasses, but can look washed out in the fall. My advice is to choose contrasting colors for more vibrant bold images, or stick with cream, tan, sage, olive, apricot for a more subtle vibe.
Choose colors that complement your horse, not compete with him.
A good cowboy hat can give almost any outfit that western vibe, even if you’re wearing a dress (see #4, below).
Tip: Don’t pull your hat too low on your forehead. Even an extra 1/2” higher can let more light in to diminish any shadows across your forehead, causing grain in your images that is harder to get rid of in post editing.
Whether colorful dress boots or worn out working boots, they are a part of the story and they’ll be more visible in your photos than you think.
All photo sessions include at least one style change, so you can mix it up and show both sides of you and your horse.
Just be sure you’re comfortable in both outfits, and that you’ve tried them on to avoid any wardrobe mishaps during your session.
