Wittman Farms has a long history in the Lewis Clark Valley area, around Lewiston, Idaho. Established around 1920, the two brothers came over from the Union Town (Washington) area, and settled here. They started out with purebred Hereford cattle and then started gaining crop ground shortly thereafter. The are currently running a three-way cross – Black Baldy, black Angus and red Angus, with a few Herefords mixed in.
Originally from Emmett, Idaho, Dawn came north to attend University of Idaho in Moscow. She and her husband bought into his family ranch in the 1980’s, right as the cattle market was tanking, so she took an outside job, as so many ranching wives do.
Back in those days she helped out driving truck for the farming side of the operation, but her love is the horses and cattle, having grown up with horses. She enjoys feeding the first-calf heifers with her grandkids and gathering cattle with the family.
While Dawn is mostly retired and now just helps out with ranch work, officially daughters Katie and Cori, who are 4th generation on the ranch, along with their husbands and a cousin and his wife, are the three current partners in the farm and ranch.
Every year they finish out a certain number of animals for their family and employees, as well as donate to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and Operation Overwatch.
